What does the Rev. Jerry Falwell say about people who are gay or lesbian?

Jerry Falwell says that people who are gay and lesbian are sinning and that one's sexual orientation is something that can be changed. He says that he believes these things because that is what the Bible says about the subject.

We strongly disagree.

This website was created as a way to help people understand why we so strongly disagree with Dr. Falwell. This site is here to help you study the question of what the Bible really says about people who are gay, enabling you to reach your own conclusions.

The Bible has tens of thousands of verses in it. It is all too easy to quickly find one or two verses to support a viewpoint that is nevertheless wrong. This website will enable you to take a little extra time with this issue as we examine it in greater depth.

Our challenge to Rev. Falwell

Rev. Falwell, we challenge you to take another look at the way you use the Bible against people who are gay. There are countless ministers and other religious leaders who do not believe that the Bible should be abused to condemn people who are gay or lesbian. They believe that only through accepting, welcoming and affirming gays and lesbians do they express the full, glorious love of God.

These great men and women of the Lord understand that we are not all the same. They acknowledge that not all people fall in love with the opposite gender. This is simply a fact of life and has been so for as long as history has been recorded.

A person is not gay or lesbian because of bad character or low morals. None of us decided which gender to be attracted to, and sexual orientation is not a decision. It is something that is decided for you, and it is decided for you long before you even KNOW what sexuality even is.

In light of this new modern understanding of sexuality, it is a moral imperative that we take a new look at our old beliefs.

People who are heterosexual are not that way because they have better morals than gay people. In fact, one of the most profound moral choices that confront people who are gay or lesbian is whether to be honest or to lie. People who are openly gay have simply chosen to be honest with you.

What makes a family?

Love and commitment is what makes a family. Anyone who has ever read the Word of God knows that it has one main message; "Love your neighbor as yourself" and "Love the Lord God with all your heart, mind and soul".

Dr. Falwell says that he is on the side of truth. We believe, however, that if the reverend were to open his heart towards people who are gay or lesbian, he would discover that scripture has been abused to support an anti-gay agenda which subtracts from the loving message of the gospel.

The Bible has been abused by those who are prejudiced against gay people and it is time that the Christian church put a stop to it.

After all, the Gospel can be summarized in one sentence. "For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever shall believeth on Him shall not perish, but have eternal life". (John 3:16)

Many Christians believe that it is grossly immoral and against the Spirit of Christ to ask gay and lesbian people to change. What are gay people doing wrong? They are loving each other. They build families, friendships and businesses. They even build churches!

A challenge to the anti-gay fundamentalist . . .

You claim to love Jesus Christ. You claim to love God. But what if God knocked on the door of your heart and said, "I want you to stop disapproving of my gay and lesbian children. You are abusing My Word."

What would you do?

Would you open your heart to His voice, or would you have a tough time giving up your old prejudices, even though you just heard the voice of God?
